An unlikely place for a library, the fourth floor of this parking garage also has a surprising sophistication of design. Added in 1988–1989 to a pre-existing parking garage, the library has vast expanses of glass to take advantage of the views in three directions. To break away from the boring regularity of a rectangular structure, a curving path from the corner elevators leads through the heart of the library, creating interesting spaces and glass-enclosed conference rooms as it goes. Designed by Minch Ritter Voelckers Architects of Juneau, the library is an unexpected haven in the bustling waterfront.
