Madison County Record Building

-A A +A
1964, E. Fay Jones. 201 Church St.
  • (Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, A Division of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, Mason Toms, photographer)

This two-story building for the county’s newspaper office reveals the powerful influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on Jones’s work in the strong horizontal emphasis, the thin layers of local stone in the corner piers, the continuous band of windows tucked under the deep eaves, and the emphasis of the roof extension as a concluding element. Orval Faubus, owner of the newspaper and also the state’s governor, commissioned Jones to design the building shortly after the architect designed Faubus’s house (MA3).
