This dramatic residence demonstrates the turn-of-the-twentieth-century transition from Queen Anne to the symmetry and classicism of Beaux-Arts influence. Merchant and banker J. S. Cowdrey engaged a Texas contractor to build this two-and-a-half-story house with its corner tower and wraparound porch. Interior trim in fine wood was milled in Memphis and shipped by packet steamer down the Mississippi and White rivers to the port nearest Yellville, probably Buffalo City. The Cowdrey family occupied the house until it was sold in 1971.
