This small, square, one-story granite dungeon with two-foot-thick walls was built into a hillside. Originally used by the security guards hired by British mine investors, the jail became town property upon Silver Plume's incorporation in 1880. Facilities were spartan, and prisoners had to be taken for meals to a nearby boarding house. It became a dog pound after human offenders were moved to the county jail in Georgetown.
