From its 1867 founding as the Patrons of Husbandry, the Grange organized rural folk for political, economic, and social reasons, including the formation of cooperatives and the Montgomery Ward mail order house. The national organization, whose membership peaked at almost two million in the 1870s, appealed to Coloradans.
