A rectangular, symmetrical structure, this two-story courthouse has cross-gabled wings on a granite foundation and a raised basement. Red pressed brick from Durango is trimmed in rough red sandstone from the Cutler Quarry, 18 miles south of Rico. The central entry is at the base of a protruding, square, three-story tower with a pyramidal cap flanked by hipped dormers. The arches, rough-faced stone, and verticality of the most imposing building in town hint at the Richardsonian Romanesque style.
