Henry Smith, a Civil War veteran from Illinois, used local sandstone to build three walls of this tiny cabin around a sandstone monolith into whose smooth red face he carved a bed niche. Smith, who is said to have made his living as a tombstone carver, practiced on the nearby cliffs. His cabin was given a new shingle roof in the 1960s by the Youth Conservation Corps.
