The name belies the predominant Mediterranean Revival mode of this apartment-turned-condominium. Column capitals, cornices, architraves, friezes, wrought iron, and other ornament give a highly decorative appearance to an early example of this style in Denver. Tile roofs on the corner towers form semisheltered roof garden rooms connected with open promenades. Each apartment originally opened onto the ornately columned balconies over the entrances. Walter Rice was an engineer and inventor who designed and mass-produced his own terracotta trim and frankly advocated simple buildings sugar-coated with terracotta frosting.
