To refresh beasts of burden and honor Baron Walter von Richthofen, his widow built this fountain of Pikes Peak granite. Later her ashes were interred in a bronze repository in the fountain wall. Besides the name Richthofen, the foundation is inscribed with a line from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner to emphasize the bucolic nature of Montclair as a model streetcar suburb: “He Prayeth Well Who Loveth Well Both Man and Bird and Beast.”
