Stonemen's Row Historic District

Stonemasons who prospered during Denver's 1880s building boom built houses for their own families in this block. Designs came from several architects: 2753–2755 Umatilla and 2112–2114, 2118–2120, and 2140 West 28th Avenue are by Balcomb and Rice; 2122 West 28th Avenue is by the Baerresen Brothers; and 2128 West 28th Avenue is by J. H. Barnes. These flat-roofed duplexes are harmonious in repetition of Richardsonian elements, such as the triangular roof pediments, with enough variety of texture and materials to avoid monotony. The quarry-face sandstone and rhyolite mixed with red brick, combined with the weight of the Romanesque Revival elements, makes these small units seem bigger than they are. The back yards overlook the Platte Valley from a precipitous bluff offering a spectacular vista of downtown.
