
From the 1880s to around 1910 smelting was Denver's largest single industry. Of a dozen smelters which once darkened the skies but enriched the residents of the Mile High City, this is the sole survivor, its giant stack and nineteenth-century brick industrial structures separated by chain-link fencing and barbed wire from a surrounding wasteland. ASARCO was convicted in 1993 of polluting Globeville, the working-class town to which it gave birth, and ordered to begin a $38 million cleanup.
