At its dedication in 1956 a county commissioner apologized for this modest, two-story, flat-roofed brick building with ribbon windows: “After six years of drought we did not have the courage to ask you folks to become saddled with a burden of indebtedness.… Your county officials did the very best that they know how to do and they hope from the bottom of their hearts that you like what they have done.… As you probably know, $192,000 is not a great deal of money with which to build a building of this size.” The site of the razed 1904 red brick courthouse next door became the parking lot for the new courthouse.
