Local architect George King liked mansard roofs and put them on Leadville's best-known Second Empire landmarks, including the county courthouse, destroyed by fire in 1942. King capped his own modest house with a mansard roof and used another for its square tower. “Mr. King drew the plans for nearly all Leadville's best buildings,” reported the Leadville Weekly Democrat, January 1, 1881. “As an architect he has no superior in our city.” He experimented on his own house, which has second-story windows similar to those he used on the Tabor Grand Hotel and third-story roundels like those he used for the Delaware Block.
