Durango's historic residential district is a veritable catalog of 1880s to 1920s homes, ranging from mansions such as the Amy House ( LP12.3), the neighboring Wilson-Perking House (1892), and the fine, half-timbered, two-story Craftsman house at 1215 3rd Avenue, to modest cottages and bungalows such as saloonkeeper James Barrie's house (c. 1885), 1131 3rd Avenue, with a later metal roof and asbestos siding that do not conceal the graceful shape of the original cottage. Third Avenue is a tree-lined parkway with a median, generous setbacks, and planting strips that has generally inspired attractive landscaping of even the most modest dwellings.
