Editor David Day of the Solid Muldoon raised about $5,000 and St. Patrick's Catholic Church next door provided the site for this hospital opened by the Sisters of Mercy. Carney used large, rough-faced blocks from nearby Limestone Hill to erect a sturdy, two-story Italianate building with a full basement. Inside, Mother Mary Michael Cummings and her nuns offered spiritual as well as physical care, redirecting the soul of many a hardened miner. After the sisters left, it became a private hospital and, in 1971, the Ouray County Historical Museum. Three floors and twenty-seven rooms house various exhibits devoted to medical, mining, and local history. Two rough-hewn log cabins (1870s) have been transplanted to the museum grounds.
