First Presbyterian Church

1890. 4th Ave. (northwest corner of 4th St.)

This shingled Queen Anne Style church was restored in 1986 behind a large construction sign reading “GOD AT WORK.” The Reverend George M. Darley, Colorado's most prominent pioneer Presbyterian minister, founded the congregation in 1877 and spearheaded erection of this building twenty-three years later, using plans furnished by the Presbyterian Erection Board in Philadelphia. The church has suffered heavy fire damage, additions, and alterations, including installation of a steeple for the schoolhouse bell after the town's original school was demolished in 1938. Palladian windows and a red metal roof help unify somewhat disparate parts.
