Salt springs, marshes, ponds, and Salt Creek gave South Park its early name of Bayou Salado. Charles Hall, a New Yorker, homesteaded here in 1862 and opened a salt factory in 1864. Its square, 60-foot-high stack of battered stone rising above the two-story frame factory at its base is South Park's tallest landmark. Although the saltworks closed in 1883, six generations of the Hall family have operated the site as an 8,000-acre cattle ranch.
