Petrified wood from Two Buttes in Baca County covers the east and south elevations of this gas station, with logs four feet in diameter framing the front service bay, doorway, and window. The thick log specimens, said to be 150 million years old, were stacked vertically to culminate in a spiky, irregular parapet. W. G. Brown, a Lamar lumber dealer, conceived and executed the design to immortalize an otherwise standard concrete block Shamrock Station. The “Petrified Wood Gas Station” earned a listing in Ripley's Believe It or Not and survives as a tire service shop.
