One of the oldest commercial brick structures in western Colorado was built as a hardware store by Oliver P. Posey and John W. Wingate. The ornate, two-story edifice has a cast iron storefront (T. B. Pullis and Sons, St. Louis) with Corinthian columns. After housing Posey and Wingate's store and the San Juan County Bank, the building became the First National Bank of Silverton. The bank vault is still located in a building whose fine, round-arched windows on 13th Street now frame a lively, high-ceilinged saloon.
