Andrew Settle's U-shaped, single-story Territorial adobe house, said to have been built as a fort, may have been the first dwelling in town. Four entrances open onto the porch that wraps the north facade. The porch columns have Eastlake brackets under the eaves. The thick walls and multiple entrances are traditional adobe design elements, now clad in concrete, although the hipped roof, with antefixes, scroll finials, and four corbeled red brick chimneys, is definitely European in inspiration.
