The U.S. Office of Dry-Land Agricultural Investigations established this facility as the Akron Dry-Land Field Station. The staff planted 5,000 trees in the county and introduced drought-resistant strains of grain, particularly winter wheat. Three combined office and laboratory four-squares with pedimented dormers and wide, columned porches, numerous barns and sheds, and a 1975 administration building occupy the 64-acre tract.
