Bank of Hawaii

This bank stands out from its contemporaries through its Spanish Mission features. The scalloped parapet, projecting lanai capped with a red tile shed roof, and six-step base give the building a quiet dignity and sense of permanence befitting its function. Three double doors originally accessed the now remodeled interior, but one has been replaced by an automatic teller machine. The Hamakua branch of the Bank of Hawaii was established in 1911, and this building, in response to Honokaa's growth as a prosperous regional center, supplanted the more modest original building. For many years, it was the only bank in the Hamakua district.
