An appropriate dwelling for the president of a state university was, of course, a Colonial Georgian mansion, almost always equipped, as is the case here, with a two-story entrance porch. The porch of the president's house, with Ionic columns and heavy balustrade, used in conjunction with the overscaled pedimented entrance, declares that this is as much a public building as a dwelling. Chimneys rise from the end gable walls, and three large dormers puncture the front roof plane. Wood and glass porches (two stories on the left) balance the central two-story brick block.
