The architect of this impressive church building would seem to have started out taking Henry Hobson Richardson and his version of the Romanesque quite seriously. There are features about the gable end and its low and high flanking towers that have some points of similarity to Richardson's Brattle Square Church (1870–1872) in Boston. But having paid this homage, the architect turned to the Gothic Revival tradition of the late nineteenth century for his corner entry tower and its spired roof. Although the medievalism encompassed in this church runs from the Romanesque to the Gothic, the building does end up seemingly of one piece—a remarkable feat.
