Parts of the first church building, which was partially destroyed by fire in 1892, are visible on the side. The “new” 1893 front is an intriguing interpretation of the Richardsonian Romanesque. The low stone-and-brick entrance tower (perhaps originally planned as a bay) has a split band of deep grillelike windows above the door; a similar deeply set group occurs well below the Roman arched window; and a third group crops up on the right tower. Certainly a spire must have been planned for the right-hand tower. All in all, the front of the building has the adventurous sprawl of a planned ruin.
