Bechtel House

-A A +A
1931. 9 Roberts Ave.

Along with the Spanish image, the French Norman enjoyed widespread popularity during the 1920s. In the Bechtel house, forms from Normandy and Brittany are piled together to form a wonderful, playful, and romantic country chateau. On one side of the wide Gothic-arched entrance is a circular stone tower with a conical roof. A second, smaller round tower at the other side provides transitions between the low left wing and the main two-story portion of the house. High-pitched slate-covered hipped roofs, tall chimneys, and even a small glass lantern present as picturesque a roofscape as one could ask.
