The brick Harger house enjoys a commanding location atop the bluff and overlooking the city and river beyond. The date of 1890 for the large one-and-a-half-story Gothic house is remarkably late for the fashion. Its original owner, Benton M. Harger, was a dealer in books, stationery, and wallpaper, and one suspects that his literary interests may account for his choice of a medieval image. The most telling Gothic features of the design are the steeply pitched gabled roof, the highly visible bargeboards, and the piered porch running across the front of the house. The shed-roofed second-floor balcony-porch over the entrance harks back to the Eastlake style of the 1870s.
