This is one of 26 dam-and-lock projects undertaken by the federal government during the depression years to increase the navigability of the river. The concrete forms of the locks and dam are treated in a mildly Streamline fashion characteristic of the 1930s. The low profile of the dam does not disrupt the sense of the north-south flow of the river.
