Soldiers Monument

Within a heavily planted park is an impressive monument in marble. This Civil War monument was designed by E. H. Prior and was built in 1888. A bronze statue of Liberty surmounts a fluted Doric column that rises 50 feet high. On the second level of its double-tiered base are two smaller bronze statues, one of a soldier, the other of a sailor. Nearby, appropriately tucked away in a grove of trees, is a log cabin with an overscaled stone chimney on one of the gabled ends.
