Conoco Service Station

1918. Portsmouth; travel 9 miles west of Harlan on Iowa 44; the station is 1 block north of the junction of Iowa 44 and Iowa 191
  • Conoco Service Station (David Gebhard and Gerald Mansheim)

This is an early form for a service station; a rectangular single-story block with an open cut-in corner facing onto the junction of two streets. The station, built originally for Leo Monahan, is of concrete block that imitates cut stone. Contrasting red brick has been used as trim around the automobile entrances.
