Iowa Public Service Company Building

This six-story brick box visually helps to anchor the western end of the Fourth Street Mall. In the fashion of the 1970s, this building exhibits a smooth surface that carefully establishes the simple rectangular volumes. The windows and their frames are brought right out to the surface of the building, and while they are arranged in horizontal bands, the brick wall intervenes between the windows. A counternote of a row of cut-in vertical rectangles suggests an abstracted portico.
