This house presents a variation on Frank Lloyd Wright's 1906 Prairie box to be constructed of concrete, published in the Ladies Home Journal. The Waterloo architect Morton B. Cleveland provided a number of Prairie-style designs within Charles City. Taking the Wright design as a cue, he placed the entrance to the side, provided a central bay with hipped roof that projects toward the street, and enriched the surface with vertical banding accompanied by inserted tiles. This latter decorative motif at the corners of the two-story stucco-sheathed walls suggests abstracted pilasters.
