Winnebago County Courthouse

1896–1897, Kinney and Orth. Between 6th and Clark streets, south of J St.

This two-story courthouse of red brick with stone trim was built on a raised basement. In style it is Richardsonian Romanesque and has a five-story tower. Among the usual pattern of vines and leaves carved in the upper stone banding is the head of a Winnebago Indian. Kinney and Orth of Minneapolis produced a number of turn-of-the-century midwestern courthouses. An axial walkway leading to the main arched entrance is interrupted by a pool within which stands the statue of a Civil War soldier. Some changes have been made to the building (including filling in some windows with glass brick), but essentially the building remains as designed.
