Ellsworth Building / Metropolitan Theater Building

1889, c. 1915. South side of Washington, between Oaks and Stevens streets

The general impression conveyed by this three-story theater/office/retail-store building is that it is a Beaux-Arts version of an eighteenth-century English Georgian building. On the ground level a wide and grand Richardsonian arch with Sullivanesque overtones provides entrance to the theater. The second and third floors exhibit an almost Adamesque detailing of Ionic columns, quoining, windows with elaborate lintels, round windows, and an elaborate classical entablature and cornice.
