The courthouse is mildly Richardsonian Romanesque, though the main tower, with a steeply pitched roof and elongated wall dormers, falls within the Châteauesque mode. The courthouse—built of red brick, with sandstone foundations and trim—was designed by the Cleveland architect H. R. P. Hamilton, who specialized in public buildings. The courthouse was remodeled in 1938 and in the process its centerpiece—the upper portions of its Châteauesque tower—was removed. The building also acquired at that time a few hints of the thirties Moderne, including, of course, glass brick.
