Traverse Block

1893. Southwest corner of Madison and Franklin streets

The two-story brick Traverse Block matches the courthouse in its strong, assertive character. One could describe its style as Queen Anne, based more on its overall character than on the specifics of its detailing. The building has been restored, so the rhythm of its ground-floor shop windows and intervening piers can be clearly seen. The second floor displays a corner cut off at a 45-degree angle, a pair of bays, then a grouping of pilasters, all in metal. Above, there is a projecting cornice in the same material; it centers on a projecting panel bearing the building's date. At the corner is a small false-front pediment.
