Stennett House and Barn

1869. Proceed north from Red Oak 4 miles on Iowa 48; at route H20 travel east about 2 miles to tiny community of Stennett; house and barn are at east edge of town, off a gravel road

Town founder Wayne Stennett built this two-story limestone house in a late version of the much earlier Federal style. The front entrance door and accompanying side lights look out onto a small porch whose roof is supported by pairs of narrow piers at each corner. The symmetry of the front facade is matched by a balanced placement of windows on each of the side elevations. A two-story stone utility wing, also with a porch, extends from the back of the dwelling. Within the main block of the house, two brick chimneys project through the low hipped roof. Across the gravel road is the original one-and-a-half-story stone barn with an exposed basement; later wooden additions have been attached to the structure.
