Now a residence, the former carriage barn at 36 Joy Street still presents its original exterior as built by Beacon Hill merchant John D. Bates, who lived at 87 Mount Vernon Street. When Bates built a house on Arlington Street in the Back Bay in 1860 (BB4), he sold this carriage barn to two other Beacon Hill residents, Charles G. Loring and William Gray, who lived on Mount Vernon Street. Heavy rock-faced granite trim articulated the crude simplicity of the Greek Revival. Recently converted for apartments, the building survived largely intact due to its conversion in the early twentieth century as artists' lofts and as a local theater for the Boston Stage Society.
