15–27 St. Marks Road

In a community where more than five thousand three-deckers were built, the intensive period for three-decker construction in Dorchester occurred in the decade before World War I, when nearly two thousand arose. Among the finest surviving streets of three-deckers is St. Marks Road. Here the projecting masses of the three-level front porches alternate with originally shingled octagonal bays, all capped with deeply projecting cornices. The bend of the road gives further dynamism to the Classical Revival units with fluted porch piers and fine detailing of the woodwork. Comparable streetscapes climbed Jones Hill, Mount Ida, and Pope Hill, and circled the base of Saving Hill near Malibu Beach.
