St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The five copper-clad, onion-domed cupolas of the yellow brick St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church dominate this hillside site in Forest Hills. The massing and organization of the building is derived from the Church of St. Andrew (1747–1767, Kiev, Ukraine), the cradle of Slavic Christianity and monumental Byzantine/East Slavic architecture. Trained at the Kiev State Art Institute, George Kodak immigrated to Canada in 1949 and became the premier designer for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in North America. St. Andrew's iconostasis is an exceptionally fine example of a Baroque Revival icon screen, designed by Kodak in 1978 and painted by Petro Kholodny, a descendant of several generations of Ukrainian icon painters. Traditional Ukrainian embroidered vestments and weavings drape the tables and icons during the liturgy.
