Munroe Tavern and Sanderson House, two of only a handful of early- to mid-eighteenth-century buildings in Lexington, are significant for their associations with the battle of Lexington. Munroe Tavern served as a tavern throughout the eighteenth century. Exhibiting the typical growth pattern also noted for Buckman Tavern (LX10), Munroe Tavern began as a half house in the right front corner of the present building and grew in three stages to a four-room plan by the time of the battle. Sanderson House is the only pre-1750 Cape Cod–style house in Lexington. Each house preserves eighteenth-century finish trim, and each was commandeered by General Earl Percy to house wounded British soldiers on the afternoon of April 19, 1775, while their Minuteman owners were away defending the town.
