Adjoining the Central Square Historic District (LY7) is a small concentration of commercial and industrial buildings, including two major shoe factories that survived the massive 1889 fire. The Harrison-Newhall Shoe Factory (21–25 Munroe Street) and the Nichols and Ingalls Shoe Factory (31–35 Munroe Street) were built after an earlier fire in 1869. Constructed of brick with Italianate trim, these buildings are important remnants of the early period of the shoe industry in Lynn. The district also includes the Johnson-Filene Building (50–52 Munroe Street), the site of William Filene's “One Price Clothing Store” in 1878–1880, the predecessor to Filene's Department Store and Bargain Basement established in Boston in 1890.
