Payette Associates successfully capitalized on the narrow site, located between Perkins (NY7.2) and Pierce (NY7.3) halls. Despite limited frontage on Oxford Street, the architects produced a welcoming entrance across the building's width; at the same time, they developed a second entrance to the building from the Law School Quadrangle, acknowledging the importance of this facade. The veneer of red brick with burnt headers creates a handsome texture that relates Maxwell Dworkin to its immediate neighbors and to the rest of Oxford Street. Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft funded the building, which was named in honor of their mothers.
