This is the grandest of Ellicott City’s former hotels, reflecting its growing reputation as a summer retreat. The Second Empire building is distinguished by its stone construction, mansard roof, and front galleries. The others, also of stone construction, include the Ellicott’s (Old) Patapsco Hotel (c. 1810; 8044–8046 Main), purchased in 1846 by the Granite Manufacturing Company to house workers in their nearby textile mill, and investor Andrew McLaughlin’s Railroad Hotel (c. 1840; 8030–8034 Main), which encompassed eighteen guestrooms, each with a fireplace.
