Located in an otherwise conventional office park area, the NOAA Center is a gleaming, sculptural home for federal meteorologists and research scientists. The design combines three curved wings around a central five-story atrium. Large expanses of window wall on the largest wing are screened with brise soleil, while portions of the lower wings are sheathed with opaque masonry composite materials pierced by tall windows set at deliberately irregular angles. Environmentally sustainable features include a combination of green and membrane roofs, with a four-story waterfall collecting runoff into a cistern for site irrigation.
