This diminutive rusticated stone bank building across from the courthouse signifies Denton’s role as a commercial center for Caroline County. Denton was designated the county seat in 1790, and the first courthouse (demolished) was completed in 1797. The current courthouse is a 1966 Colonial Revival building with some remnants of the 1895 second courthouse. The richly detailed former People’s National Bank stands out amidst the simple, two-story brick or concrete early-twentieth-century commercial buildings along Market Street and around the public square, although its architect is unknown. The Law Building next door (1902; 112–116 Market), at three stories the largest building in Denton’s commercial district, was constructed as a Masonic lodge with commercial space on the ground floor. Both buildings are now used as law offices.
