The red-brick Colonial Revival courthouse, distinguished by a central tower with clock and octagonal lantern, is the county’s third. A fire destroyed much of the downtown yet provided an opportunity for revitalization, beginning with this building. Gott’s mix of colonial motifs include pedimented pavilions defined by Ionic pilasters, Doric portico, and round-arched windows with upper tracery. Later additions occupy the former courthouse square to the sides and rear of the building, leaving only the facade intact.
