Constructed by Henry and Georgeanna Williams, Linden sits on a bucolic site outside of the Calvert County seat of Prince Frederick. Williams practiced law in Prince Frederick and served in the state legislature while living at Linden, originally an L-shaped house with subdued Italianate details. The third owner, teacher and lawyer John B. Gray, purchased the house at auction in 1888 and is responsible for its current form. Around 1907 he had the L-shaped house transformed into one with a symmetrical plan. The addition closely matched the front gable and weatherboard siding of the original. A new porch with plain Tuscan columns stretched across the front of the house. Members of the Gray family lived at Linden until the late 1980s. Today the house and a collection of outbuildings are owned by the Calvert County Historical Society.
