Samuel Elliot House

Intricate and lacy, the cutout stars, circles, swirls, and loops frost the gable-end, bargeboard, and arcaded front porch of this delightful little wooden house with a steeply pitched gable roof. The house was built by Samuel Elliot in 1895, after fire destroyed his earlier house. Elliot was an early settler, woodworker, sawmill operator, and shipbuilder who had come from Wisconsin by 1861. Unusual in this part of Michigan, the house reveals the pleasure Elliot took in the workability of wood.
