The nineteen-mile-long stretch of MI 119 that meanders along the Lake Michigan shoreline offers spectacular views of the lake and the Beaver Island archipelago. Here the road has no shoulders, with trees and brush growing up to its edges, and takes two sharp hairpin turns—Devil's Elbow and Horseshoe Bend. In June 2003 the Michigan Department of Transportation designated MI 119 a scenic heritage route. Tourists are captivated by the route, but local residents prefer to travel more directly on State Road (Emmet County Road 77).
